Split Fiction Friend Pass: Setup, Crossplay and Guest Limits

Guides · 5 min read

Set up Split Fiction Friend Pass with one copy, invite a crossplay partner, and check demo access, accounts, online subscriptions and guest limits.

Split Fiction Friend Pass lets an owner invite a guest to play the full game online without buying a second copy. The guest installs Friend's Pass on their own platform, then accepts the owner's invitation. EA's Friend's Pass overview confirms this arrangement and the need for an internet connection and applicable platform account.

Crossplay is supported, but a free guest download does not remove account or console online-service requirements. Below is the setup order, followed by the limitations worth checking before you arrange an evening together. Official sources were checked on October 22, 2026; we have not tested a live session.

1. Choose a full-game session or the free trial

What you haveWhat to do next
One player owns the gameOwner installs the full game; guest installs Friend's Pass
Neither player owns the gameBoth install Friend's Pass to try the opening stages
You want to share one deviceCheck the local co-op section below before arranging an online invitation

The official Steam announcement confirms that two pass users can try the opening stages together and continue their progress if one buys the full game. This is a useful way to decide whether you enjoy playing together before choosing who will own it.

Our suggestion is to use that trial for the practical questions a trailer cannot answer: are both players comfortable with the controls, can you communicate clearly, and does the pace suit your pair? Agree to stop and discuss those points before making a purchase.

2. Find the guest download

On Steam, the official store page has a separate Play Split Fiction - Friend's Pass section with an install option. Use that section for the guest rather than the full-game purchase area. The page also lists system requirements; compare those against the guest's PC before planning the session.

A sensible preparation order is to finish both downloads first, then deal with accounts and invitations. Leave installation time outside your planned playing time. Do not assume that a free pass means a tiny download, and do not buy another copy simply because finding the guest option took longer than expected.

3. Check the two platforms and accounts

EA's platform FAQ explicitly includes PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 in Friend's Pass availability, with cross-platform play. It also says online players need EA accounts linked to their platform accounts.

Write down your exact device names when comparing setups. In particular, “Switch” is too imprecise when the supported platform is Nintendo Switch 2. Our recommendation is to resolve that distinction before downloading anything or choosing a console version.

For invitations across platforms:

  1. Open the game on both devices and sign in to the appropriate EA accounts.
  2. Open the EA Friends List in the game and add your partner's EA account.
  3. Have the owner send the invitation and the guest accept it in-game.

EA says the recipient must have the game running and be signed in. If the EA Friends List is unavailable, its FAQ directs PlayStation players to the game's cross-play option and Xbox players to account privacy settings.

4. Budget for console online access separately

EA Help says PlayStation and Xbox online players need the applicable platform subscription. For a mixed PC-and-console pair, check the console player's entitlement before treating “one copy” as the entire setup cost. EA's Xbox FAQ states that PC players do not need an online-play subscription.

We do not quote subscription prices or recommend a particular paid tier here. Check the current online-multiplayer entitlement on your own platform. A working account, a game license and online access answer different questions; having one does not establish that the others are ready.

What changes if you play on one screen?

EA's PlayStation FAQ confirms offline local co-op without an EA account. It lists two controllers, or a controller plus keyboard and mouse on PC. The pass also offers a local co-op demo.

If you are sharing a room and a device, start by deciding whether this local arrangement meets your needs. You can then avoid spending your preparation time troubleshooting an online invitation you did not need. Our local co-op versus online co-op guide explains how the setups differ.

Can the guest keep playing or earn achievements?

The same EA FAQ says pass players need an online session with a full-game owner to access the complete adventure. Achievements and trophies are restricted to owners. Pass progress carries over if the guest purchases the game.

The owner can change partners, one at a time, and controls the starting point through a new game, continuing a save or selecting a previously reached chapter. Our recommendation is to agree on a starting point before inviting someone new: joining far into an existing playthrough may spoil discoveries even when the game permits it.

What should you check if it does not work?

First identify the stage that failed: installation, sign-in, finding your partner, accepting the invitation or entering the full game. Record the exact message and both platforms. That gives support something more useful than “Friend Pass is broken.”

For child accounts, EA Help specifically points to platform privacy permissions for online crossplay. It also documents a narrower issue: if the pass still launches after purchasing the game, restart the platform and, for a physical copy, insert the disc. Treat that as a fix for that symptom, not every connection failure.

If you are still choosing a game, compare our co-op puzzle games on Steam for two. For another guest-access arrangement, see the separate Operation Tango Friend Pass guide; each game's rules need checking on their own.
